Dont know what the problem is

by kadi98, Mar 05, 2008 10:44AM
To me my 9 year old acts very immature, he has always exceled in reading and spelling, math is OK as long as its not one you have to read and figure out. He just doesnt listen or focus and doesnt complete school work. In 1st grade prompted by his teacher he was tested for ADHD and I was told he is a normal active boy, not ADHD. He had problems in 3rd grade but not near as bad. He has outburst at school, just says what pops into his head, trys to make kids laugh, is more concerned about someone liking him than school work, complains of noises in class, gets distracted at school easily. He has a few friends but seems like socially he is having problems being accepted, cause he acts a little immature?? We fight at home to just get work not done at school completed, taking stuff away doesnt help. He may pass to 5th grade but I think he'll get a tougher teacher and he is really going to have problems. What could be wrong?

The symptoms you are describing do sound like ADHD.-- almost textbook ADHD, actually.
I know you had him evaluated before, but I think you consider having him evaluated again.

MY SON HAD THESE BEHAVIORS ALSO AND HE HAS ASPERGERS SYNDROME.  TRY HAVING HIM TESTED FOR PDD-PERVASSIVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER.
IT CANT HURT.  IT IS IN THE AUTISM SPECTRUM.  READ UP ON IT AND SEE IF ALOT OF IT PERTAINS TO YOUR CHILD.
THESE CHILDREN USUALLY EXCELL IN SOMETHING AND ARE VERY IMMATURE AND HAVE A HARD TIME BEING SOCIALLY ACCEPTED.  THEY HAVE A REAL DIFFICULT TIME WITH SOCIAL SKILLS AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS GONNA COME OUT OF THEIR MOUTH.  NOISE IS A BIG FACTOR.  THEY HAVE A REAL HARD TIME FUNCTIONING WHEN THERE ARE LOUD NOISES.

My son is ten and has very similar issues.  He is in 5th grade and is having a real hard time with the responsibilities that has been put onto him.  He is a bright child, but for some reason he is not doing his work.  He always "forgets it at school" or tells me he "finished it at school", when he actually hasn't.  This is not like him.  Even though doing homework has sometimes been a battle, he has never lied about it.  My teacher wants him tested for ADD because he has a hard time focusing in class.  I then hear stories that his classroom is chaotic, how can anyone focus if this is true.  I don't know if this will help you or not, but I am planning an unannounced visit to his classroom to observe what goes on.  I will get it approved in the office, but will not let the teacher or my son know that I'm coming.  I think too often a child is said to be ADD or ADHD, when there are other circumstances going on that may play a part in why your child is acting the way they are.  I think that a trip to the Dr.'s office or even a Therapist (that's what I'm trying), to get a another point of view, may be worth it.  Good Luck.
