Effexor XR for ADHD

by shelly, Mar 16, 2000 12:00AM
We recently took our 10 year old son off of Ritalin because he didn't like to take it (upset stomach and he felt what he called "shy" around the other boys).  He has been off Ritalin for about a month and while he is doing well academically and doing alright behaviorally, he still exhibits the signs of hyperactivity which are bound to get him into trouble sooner or later.  Our doctor suggested using the anti-depressant Effexor XR to basically "take the edge off" his hyperactivity.  Have you heard of this medication being successful for this purpose?

Dear Shelly,

Yes, Effexor may indeed have a beneficial influence and introduce a bit more evenness in your child's behavior (even though it wouldn't be regarded as a 'front line' treatment for ADHD).

I was recently prescribed Effexor for my only form of medicine for mangagement of my ADHD-R.  I am 25 years old and stimulants were either making sleep all the time or making me hyper.  I was on Adderal and was experiencing the same effects as a person on methamphetimines.  We will try this new med and hope for the best

my 10 year old was given effexor along with adderoll for add and depression, it made her out of control, mean, defient, she was being pulled from class etc...I took her off of it, she does much better with just the adderoll, she was on adderoll 5 months prior to the effexor, i would much rather deal with her on adderoll alone that include that drug, in addition, she wanted to sleep always and her pupils were dialated to the point she had no color of eyes, she looked like a person on drugs....I did not continue her by my choice.
