Fixations

by Kathy, Nov 15, 2000 12:00AM
My 7 year old son has had a fixation with ceiling fans since he was an infant.  He has grown out of vacuum cleaners but is still quite focused on fans, any fans.  He is very bright, especially in reading and lanquage in general.  I'm not concerned so much as I am curious as to what should be done to encourage a talent that he may have due to this fixation.  He is also an avid collector of toy cars, has a great memory, etc.

Dear Kathy,

I'm not sure you need to do anything in particular in response to your son's interest. It sounds like he's doing fine. He might enjoy exploring the operation/construction of small engines and contraptions that operate with such engines, and pursuing such a hobby might be interesting to him. But, it wouldn't be irresponsible simply to let him have this fascination and do with it what he will. Dr. KDK
