Frustrated 7 year old boy

My son is 7 years old and is having behavior issues.  I have had comments made regarding possible high functioning autism.  He is in 1st grade.  Working towards proficiency in most scholastic areas, but day dreams (zones out) quite frequently.  Teacher will address him and he catches up instantly.  Socially challenged.  Wants to be part of group, but does not initiate friendships and has tendency not to acknowledge attempts from other children.  Extremely lonely.  Seems hurt.  Teacher suggested baseball to improve social skills, but attention span limited to about 10 minutes and then has to be addressed.  Becomes angry and frustrated if corrected.  Does not appear to have fun, but wants to continue.  Other children initiate conversation and he is almost locked inside.  Doesn't seem to see the attempts.  Has had multiple fights at school.  He doesn't initiate the physical response, but if he decides he wants to talk to a child and they don't pay attention, he gets in their face.  If they tell him to leave them alone he will just harass them because he wants to talk to them.  Once angry at a child, holds the grudge and doesn't move past.  Have tried to have him vocalize reason for anger and he cannot.  Says he doesn't know why he gets so angry.  I'm more concerned about the hurt and anger escalating as he gets older.  I keep saying he'll find himself, but I need to know what to do to help him.  Any suggestions?

You should have him evaluated by a psychological professional, for starters. A professional would be able to come up with some answers as to why he is having the issues that is having, as well as what would be the appropriate treatment for his issues. I think waiting for him to outgrow this is not the correct approach.

Some children need more help in social areas than others-- and there are professionals that can help your son  in this area -- earlier treatment will help him more in the long run, so he spends less time frustrated.
