Gross motor movement normal?

by kayla487, Jul 19, 2004 12:00AM
My wife recently submitted a question about my son.  She forgot to ask about a motor movement question.  My son just turned 2 years old.  While he walks fine and never falls, he doesn't really swing his arms with the walking motion.  They move a bit, but not in a swinging motion.  Also when he runs his arms are moving but not always in the most coodinated way.  Is this normal for this age?  or is something to have evaluated?  He can kick a ball and catch a ball with usually no problem.  He can also walk backwards.  He's not really clumsy and can climb anything at the park with no problems, and can even do a chin up.  We just wanted to know if we should be concerned with a walk that doesn't include arm swinging at the age of 2(25months)

Your description of your son's movement does not indicate a problem. It is important to observe a child in motion when assessing such a question, so be sure to check with his pediatrician. The doctor can issue an opinion based on a number of aspects of gross motor functioning. Having said that, it does not sound like your son is experiencing any problem with gross motor functioning.
