Harm in a child taking an adult dose for vitamin

My 3 1/2 yr old son just took one of my calcium/vitamin d vitamins. How much can his body handle, and what should I look for if something were to be wrong?

I've called after "silly" things too :) They don't judge (at least not to the callers!!) We found the baby eating one of this little silicon packets that come in new shoes and called. At work, we've had to call after noticing a kid eat soap, glue, gak (homemade silly putty made with glue and borax), etc... One thing I found in my baby's mouth was so silly, I'm embarrassed to mention it here. But if there is every any iota of doubt, call.

Poison control is fantastic.  Don't ever think it's a trivial question.  I just went through a period of total sleep deprivation as my son had a nasty throat infection/bronchitis.  In my sleep deprived state I accidentally put our adult toothpaste on his toothbrush (he is 2) and of course he swallowed it right away.  I read the label and it said if ingested by children under 12 (it's a whitening type) to call poison control.  I did, and they were fantastic!  It was a small amount, so the call probably wasn't necessary, but they took me seriously, had me read them the ingredients list and told me exactly what to watch for and what to do (they had me have him drink a glass of milk).  They were fantastic!  Just sharing that to encourage you to do as tiredbuthappy suggested.  I often feel silly calling in about things, but it's so worth it.

For the future-
anytime your child ingests anything that is not meant for him, you should always *immediately* call poison control. They are available 24/7 to answer questions like this. I suspect it's fine since it was only, but by the time you post a question and receive responses it could be too late for other pills.

go to http://www.aapcc.org/dnn/About/FindLocalPoisonCenters/tabid/130/Default.aspx
and find your local poison control number. Post it to your fridge so it's always on hand.

I think to be safe you should call your pediatrician.  A multi vitamin would be harmful due to the iron in them.  My son ate a bunch of 'tums with calcium' once and we called the doctor and were told that it was fine.  But I always think it is best to check.  good luck
