He Listens to everyone but me

by MrsLenz, Oct 29, 2007 05:29PM
My son is 5 and started Kindergarten this year. I have been told from his teacher that he is well behaved and occasionally has an issue with sharing but, he's an only child and has been home with me for the majority of his little life. When my husband is home with our son he says that he acts just fine. All of my friends think he is the biggest sweetheart, then he is home with me and tells me "NO" or screams for no good reason, will not do anything I say, I give a warning and then send him to his room for a 5 min time out and he just stands by the door screaming "I DO NOT WANT TO". Any reason that he is only like this for me when I am the one he has spent the most time with? It's breaking my heart!

I think you need to get tougher.

Be stern, stick to your guns.  But do not yell or freak out.
Keep your calm, set the rules and be firm.

This is a good sign that you are a good mom!  Children act out to the person they feel safe with.  He knows he can release his feelings and you will still love him nomatter what.  Of course it's difficult for you, but it's normal.  My daughter's teacher suggested we try "first time obedience."  We've told her we're doing this, and so now she knows that if I ask her to do something, she has to listen to me, or timeout.  There's no reason, although it's tempting as a parent, to give warnings.  Warnings only teach them they don't have to listen to you the first time.  Sounds like you're a great mom! :)
