Hitting

by MomB03, Dec 02, 2008 03:20PM
Hello,

My 2 1/2 year old daughter goes to a daycare in-home and plays with 4-5 other little kids.  She has begun to pick on one certain child that is also a girl and is also 2 yrs. old.  She seems to be playing very well with her in the morning and then all of sudden she starts to hit her later in the day.  Our daycare provider has put her in timeouts and explained to her that it's not nice to hit and she laughs about the situation.  At home she does have an older brother that seems to pick on her occationally....just like siblings do!  We do have a 10 month old boy who she does not pick on or hit at any time.  Any suggestions on how to handle this situation?

Just talk to her about not hitting others.  Do not allow hitting at home.  Kids do hit and some kids bite.  They eventually outgrow it.  My 4-year-old still hits and we are still trying to get her to stop.  We just remind her not to hit.  Kids hit even if they have never been hit.  It amazes me that this is not a learned behavior.  All you can really do is talk to her about it seriously.  Our 4 year old is sensitive and cries when we talk to her about it.  She used to laugh also at age 2.  Be patient and consistent with her.  She doesn't have the concept yet to fully understand.  She might also be doing it for special attention from the teacher.  If she gets bored, she may want to get some action happening.
