Hyper Active

Hyper Active

Ok so i am a young mom with two small boys ( 3 year old & 1 year old). My 3 year old is to me unusually hyper active, he is always screaming and jumping and doesn't hold still. Sometimes he speaks to me and i don't understand what he is saying. If someone could please help me, i don't know what to do, i know not to compare his progress to other children because they all develop differently but shouldn't i be able to understand what he is saying? And whenever i put him in time out and later go to him and speak to him about why he was put in time out and why he should not do it, he repeats everything i say. Its frustrating and worrying me. Should i take him to a psychologist? I know it sounds crazy because he is only 3 but i dont know what else to do, if someone has any suggestions please let me know i will highly appreciate it.

Thank you.

He could be possibly trying to get attention , he has a younger sibling and very often they do feel some jealousy which would manifest itself in trying to get your attention .Try to give him some one to one  time get Dad involved playing games with just him ,, its hard on an older child they feel usurped when a sibling arrives , takes some time , as for his repeating what you say I have seen this in children , I think that maybe a word with your Doctor wont hurt at all . Good luck

I think you're smart to compare him to other children - that's how we figure out how our child is progressing.  Obviously you don't want to pick one single child to keep comparing him too,  but in general,  comparing him to lots of other children his age helps you learn his strengths and weaknesses.

It sounds like maybe you should take him to be evaluated by an Occupational Therapist.  You can call your local school and get a referral that they recommend -

Best wishes.   The part of your post that most caught my eye was when you try to talk to him,  he repeats what you say and you often have trouble understanding what he is saying. The abundant activity level is pretty common.
