I am so confused...can anyone help?

by Jennifer Petty, Mar 08, 2003 12:00AM
Hi,and thank you for having this service..I have a 3 yr old boy who was dx as autistic at the age of 18 months. Then at the age of 28 months I took him to another doctor because there was some question of the 1st dx.At the 2nd evualation I was told my son had PDDNOS, MR,and ADHD now once again this is in question because he is talking now (1 word utterences with sentence patterns comming). Now a 3rd doctor is doing a evualation and as of now she states all she sees is Sensory Intergration Dysfunction. I am so confused I don't know what the real problem is. Here is a little bit about him, Billy is a loving child and ONLY seeks out adults...he perfers playing alone. The only children he will associate with his his 2 siblings...he plays along side of kids at school but not with them. When he gets upset he sits in my lap and makes me rock him side to side. He lines up his cars, and if I try to move any of his toys he goes nuts! He cant stand to be touched (by anyone but me) wont tollerate haircuts, baths,or clothes. He turns tv's on and off and light switches on and off constantly. When he gets upset he either bangs his head and body on the floor, busts out windows, orlays on his floor for hours rolling his cars back and forth. He loves spinning objects(had to take occelating fan out of his room would stare for hours at it. I printed out a autism criteria form off line and he has alot of things on that list but now I am being told it is just SI, is that possible? Email me when you can,***@****. And thanks so much and God Bless. I hope you can help!!!

The behaviors you describe do point in the direction of a diagnosis along the Pervasive Developmental Disorder spectrum, though it can be difficult to pinpoint with a child so young because development can proceed at such a fast pace. Also, PDD can exist alongside sensory integration problems, and the two can overlap, thus making diagnosis a real challenge. It is very sensible to keep monitoring his condition, and now that he is three be sure to seek out Early Intervention services for him. He'll certainly requuire special educational resources.
