Inappropriate sexual play between 7 year old girls

by Nessa, Apr 21, 2001 12:00AM
My daughter was having a play date over at a girlfriend's house (both are 7) when the friend asked my daughter to kiss her private area.  My child didn't want to but the other child begged and begged and my daughter relucantly agreed to. She thought the other girl wouldn't be her friend anymore unless she complied.  During this activity, the friends' father walked into the girls' room and witnessed part of the activity.  My daughter
said the girls' parents treated her like a criminal and she was afraid she was going to be punished for this.  I've had a conversation w/my child about approp. touching, etc and that she
shouldn't do anything that makes her feel uncomfortable and that
real friends don't put conditions on friendship.  My daughter is
very upset about this whole incident and during our talk she
mentioned that this other girl has asked my daughter to do this
before.
Is there anything else I should be saying or doing to/for my daughter and also to the other child's parents ?  I don't want to
have this blown out of proportion but rather to look at this activity as a hard learned lession.  Any advice would be
appreciated as her father and I are saddened that my daughter
had to go thru this....Thank you.

You are offering your daughter sensible guidance. You'll have to decide if you should speak with the other girl's parents about what you've learned. Will they be receptive to this, do you think? It might be useful to simply ask to have a chat with them about what has occurred, without implying any notion of who instigated the contact. It'll make sense, of course, to monitor your daughter's contact with this girl. If you have confidence in her parents, there's no need to prohibit contact, but you'll want to be assured that there will be good supervision of the children, whether at your house or the other girl's house.
