Infant afraid of the dark

Infant afraid of the dark

I have a 7 week old foster baby. She seems to be afraid of the dark. Is that possible?
She came from a home with no electricity . When she goes to sleep she cryes if it is dark but quits down with a small light. Any help would be great.

Since you are seeing signs of the child having issues with the dark I would definitely keep a nite-lite in the baby's nursery. This is very possible. Who knows what condition the child was exposed to before living in your home as far as the dark being some association with something bad that happens. Maybe in the dark the child heard a lot of fighting or yelling and so she might have associated the dark and laying in bed at night to something bad. It could also just be that in the dark the child knows it will be left alone and this could be a scary thing for her. If the nite-lite works I would stick to that for now and see what happens in the next few months.
Good luck and I think its a wonder thing to be a foster parent; kudos! ;))

I would let her fall asleep with a nightlight on but I would try to turn the light off once she is in a deep sleep, only because sleeping with a light on all the time is not the best of a child's visual development - everyone does better with some periods of complete darkness. But if she will not sleep at all without a light on, it is better for her to get enough sleep, so I would leave a small light on.
