Is hypothyroidism hereditary?

by Anu, Nov 01, 1999 12:00AM
Based on the results of t3,t4 and tsh I was found to be hypothyroid. Ten years back, I had a miscarriage and the gynaec then told me it could be because of low progesterone level. Later I had two children (My sons are 9 and 5 yrs old now). I want to know if hypothyroid is hereditary. If so are the symptoms in children different from adults. Should they undergo the blood test? Pl advise.
Thanks & Regards,

Dear Anu,

Thyroid problems can be caused by genetic factors affecting the immune system. Congenital hypothyroidism can result in mental retardation and growth problems, so its detection early on is very important. Apparently your sons have developed well, with no signs of hypothyroidism, but talk with your doctor about your concerns. He/she can guide you.
