Is my child delayed

My daughter will be 5yr next month. She pulled up and started crawling at l6mos.  Walked at 20mos.  She is about yr. behind with speech.   Her speech is very hard to understand and her concept of things I feel are behind. She isn't good at following directions especially more than one.  She just now can walk up a few steps slowly without holding on.  She can go down 1-2 steps without holding on.  She isn't able to jump off things higher than a couple inches.  She isn't a climber.  She can only balance a few sec. on one foot then falls over.  She can jump up and down though. She can pedal a tricy. somewhat as long as it is flat surface, and steering is not always good.  She can kick a ball very slowly and can miss.  She can throw a ball overhand but it doesn't go where she wants it half the time.  She can catch a bll if you throw it underhand to her very slowly and she puts her hands out it just sorta goes in there.  She can't reach out and catch it.She doesn't know any letters except H. A few numbers she can identify if you ask her to point out like number 3. But if you ask her what a no. is she isn't able to say.  Her doctor has been following her but she just can't say for sure if she needs therapy. She is now able to color fairly well but can't write her name though she tries to copy it if you write it down.  She is also very tiny, 38.5" and 30lbs.  She was once tested for Williams Syndrome but had a neg. FISH test.  She loves to be silly and entertain people.  She does act younger than kids her age.  Could you tell me about how far behind develpmentally she is or if she

my son is 4 and a half he went to pre school and he knows his letters and numbers up to 15 but he cant read and has trouble (lots) writing his name he can if he sees it and copies it if i can get him to sit and focas long enough my preschool says hes right on  the money for his age..your daughter does not seem to be that far behind..maybe a little maybe you could find a tutor for her or a part time preschool.. and my school district offers a full day kindergarden for children who are a little behind..maybe you could ask the school system to test her all school systems have special programs for children who need extra help..and please dont think this will hinder your child socialy i was a coded student all through school im am not in anyway abnormal i just had a harder time learning some things now im married and have a family and i even whent to college..which i had no special help..i have a very good career..maybe this will help dont spend a fourtune let the school system do their job..thats why we pay taxes..also push for it sometimes the dont take people seriously.
its your right just push for the testing

good luck  i hope this helps

The child's problems are being followed by a doctor. The mother only asked "How far behind is she"?  She's not substituting this forum for medical care.  Perhaps her doctor isn't exactly on the ball.

There is no need for you to start in with what an extraordinary STUDENT/reader your child is. That was particularly insensitive, especially to a parent's whose child has developmental delays.

Good luck with this and I hope you success in the New Year.

yes, your daughter is very delayed.  I have a five year old and she reads as I am driving.  She reads, "No right Turn" Do Not  Block intersection"  She reads books on second grade level.  Your daughter should also know how to throw and catch a ball by now.  My daughter puts 100 piece puzzles together in 10 minutes.  Take your daughter to a doctor quick.  Too bad you didn't send her to pre-school.  They could have done early intervention. And she could be caught up by now.

Yes, you daughter clearly has some developmental delays and she should be evaluated before she gets much older. Depending on your local school district, since she is at kindergarten age, the evaluation may occur under their auspices. Another option would be to confer with her pediatrician and have her referred for evaluation by a team including a developmental pediatrician, developmental psychologist, occupational therapist and speech and language clinician.
