Long term effects of medication and puberty

by Elaine Morris, Oct 05, 1999 12:00AM
I have been told that when a child is going through puberty you have to be careful of the medications they are on as it might have side effects.  I have a 14-year old that is on 300mg Lithium 3 times day, Dextrostat 15 mg 2 times a day and Mellaril at night.  He has been on Dextrostat for about a year and the Lithium for about 9 months.  Should I be concerned?

Dear Ms. Morris,

The medications your son is taking need to be monitored for clinical efficacy and possible side effects, apart from the matter of puberty. Even if he were younger or older, he would require careful monitoring, including periodic blood levels (when appropriate). The fact that he has been taking the medications for as long as he has is not, in itself, a worry, provided he is being closely followed.

My 8 year old son is on the same medications as your son.  I would be very interested in talking to you off this board.  If you are agreeable to this, you could e-mail me at ***@****.
