Mixing Adderall(adderrall) with anti-seizure meds

by MMP, Dec 15, 2001 12:00AM
My 6 1/2 year old son was diagnosed w/ADHD and his pediatrician prescribed 10 mg. of Adderall (adderrall) to be taken in the morning. No other dosages throughout the day.  He also takes 50 mg. of Topamax a day(25 mg in morning- 25 mg at night)- for seizure disorder.  This was the first day of taking Adderall (adderrall) and he was a complete wreck.  He cried constantly and was absolutely distraught most of the day.  Could the mixing of the meds have caused such a reaction?  Should we cut the total mg of Adderall (adderrall) to maybe 5 mg?  Or should we just try a different med for his ADHD?

Sometimes stimulant medications, such as Adderall (adderrall), have the sort of effect you describe. However, a decision need not be made on the basis of one day. Consult with the prescriber to determine a plan. If such emotional lability continues, certainly a lower dose would be a sensible initial alternative.
