My 17 year old daughter has been diagnosed with conversion disorder

We live in Milwaukee and have not had any luck getting treatment for her.  Does anyone know of anyone who specializes in this near here?  I am willing to travel a couple of hours to get her some help.  Is medication needed?  Just therapy?

Hello Michelle

Contact Mentalhelp.net this website that will help you locate a therapist/doctor that can help your daughter get though this condition. Also research her disorder so that you can know what are the causes of this disorder and the treatment. This is if you have not researched this disorder already.

Hope this helps.

I think that I would ask  your primary care doctor who the best psychiatrist is in the area and one that deals with adolescents.  I would then see the psychiatrist and perhaps a psychotherapist (one who does the most talk therapy and strategizes for every day life . . .) that is affiliated with that psychiatrist.  While conversion is psychosomatic----  there is usually an underlying cause such as depression or anxiety or some other psychiatric issue.  The conversion portion may get better as the other psychiatric issues are treated.  Good luck.  That is tricky with a teenager.

Oh and to clarify----  the psychiatrist handles the meds (such as an antidepressent) and manages the overall case.  The psychotherapist manages the therapy portion.  As conversion is part of stress-----  the talk therapy part is key.  But yes, she will likely need some meds.  Finding someone that specializes in this probably isn't likely but a psychiatrist that is well versed in all psychiatric issues and adolescents will be beneficial.  Good luck.
