My 5 year old Son is not paying attention.

by nallurisai, Jun 08, 2008 11:07PM
Following are the concerns about my 5 Years old Son:-
He doesn't pay attention when anyone tries to interact with him.
He doesn't interact even with parents unless necessary.
He always runs while talking himself inside the house.
He never play together with other kids. He never turn up if he is called even 4 or 5 times.
He never follow the instructions in the pre-school. He is never in the current context, always in thinking something else.

These symptoms are increasing day by day in my Son.

Other observations:-
He enjoys watching TV(NOGGIN channel only always).
He is very interested to study books and he remembers what he read in the books very well.
He is healthy and takes good food, no tentions in home. We take care of him very well.

We live in New Jersey.

Thanks in advance,
Srinivas

Perhaps a very high-functioning child on the autistic spectrum?  As in PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified?  Or even a very high-functioning Asperger's?  Any other suggestions ......

Maybe have his hearing checked?

He can hear perfectly, no problem with that.

Here is one example: In his school, when his teacher asks to stand all the kids in a row, all kids follow that. But this kid doesn't even look at the teacher what she is telling, he sits some where and plays something. Even if the teacher makes him to stand in the queue, he stands for a while then he will start go away and do something else.

It appears then that "hearing" is not the issue, but "understanding" is.  Lack of understanding or comprehension is one of the red flags for children on the autistic spectrum.  Perhaps it is time to speak to your family doctor about your concerns.  I do know that if (and we are only guessing here) autistic tendencies are the issue, early intervention can greatly help the child.
