My 6 1/2 year old won't poop in toilet

by Jewels330, Jul 03, 2009 01:51PM
My son will not poop in the toilet, he had done it a couple of times before when he was around 4 years old. He pee's with no problem, but when it comes time to poop he asks us to put a diaper on him. If we don't he'll hold it. We don't want him to hold it for days, so we buy him diapers so he can poop. I know we are not doing him any favors by doing this. But he gets so uncomfortable and then he gets poop all in his underwear. We have tried everything from rewards to even putting a table with his toys and books on it in front of the toilet so he can play. I always thought it was a control thing with him. But I've really been concerned with this for a long time. What do you think the problem is. Do you think he has a psychological problem? What can I do!

Hi,

at 6 /12 years maybe you can discuss with him what he feels and why he can't poop in the toilet.  Treat it very matter of factly. And discuss with him how, why etc.  Let him express. And ask him what he thinks may help.  he is old enough now to make a joint effort, i'd think.  He is probably not so comfortable with this either.

One idea, what about using a diaper with a cut out at the back so he still has the physical sensation of the diaper, but sitting on the toilet still to poop.  Ask him if he thinks this would help.

Be very consistent whatever you decide to do or how to handle.

I would actually take this up with his pediatrician and make sure there is nothing physical causing this.  ie. he can't feel it properly or what? Else it may be a psychological / behavioural thing.

Be patient, work with him, and treat it very matter of factly.  Don't get emotional over it with him, which may exaccerbate things...

Just my 2c.
