My 7 yr old is too sensitive

My 7 yr old is too sensitive

My 7 yrs old boy cries about things that he shouldn't cry about.  He brought a very long book home from school yesterday and this morning was in pieces because he hadn't finished it.  In school assembly the kids were learning a new song, reading it from a screen.  He started crying and was really upset becasue he got one of the verses wrong.  I don't know what to do.

Well, there are many reasons why he might be having problems.  One that comes to mind is that he is having problems reading and is stressed about it. Talk to the teacher about his reading level and see if he needs help to get to level.  The other possibility is that he has a reading issue..like dyslexia, etc.

While littlebit667 may have something, (theory of a problem with reading), is there any other issues that cause him to become overly upset? My son who also is 7 years old is extremely sensitive will cry if he forgot his lunch for school or if cant understand a homework assignment. So, the more important question is "is he only getting upset when it comes to needing to read something?" or is it a bunch of issues that he becomes over emotional to?

Another thought comes to mind.  Have you had his vision checked??  I would check into that as one option.

I have tried a few times to comment on the answers given but for some reason it doesn't accept it.  Last try then I give up!!  Thanks for your responses and ideas, there is nothing wrong with his eyesight and he is very bright, well beyond his age in ability,, but he struggles socially.  He gets upset about all sorts of things not just reading related, that was a coincidence on that day.  He is super sensitive and very fearful,  he often leaves the room when watching something like scooby doo becasue it is too scary.  He worries about things he shouldn't worry about.  Sometimes he can't sleep because he is worrying that he will have bad dreams (but he has never woken in the night or called out as if having a bad dream)

Thank you, I've read the articles and they've helped me to see my sons behaviour in a different way.  I've ordered the book and feel a sense of relief that he is not alone and not damaged just different

Thanks for responding.  I hope it helps.  I worked for a program in my state that worked with kiddoes with special needs.  I learned a lot about sensitivity and was hoping some of my knowledge would help.  Let me know how the book is and what you thought.

I love this site.  I have been retired for over a year from being a "helper" and I really miss that part of my job.  The job not so much.  I am glad I can use some of the knowledge I gained to "help".  A appreciate that Margy!
