My 8 yr old son is lying and cheating.

My 8 yr old son is very impulsive.  He has been caught lying and cheating.  He has also stolen toys from friends and school.  When asked why he does these things, he says he just wanted the toy, or that he wanted to get 100% on the test.  My husband and I always have punishments / consequences for him.  We believe he knows the difference between right and wrong.  We are at our wits end trying to figure this out and help him to make good choices.  He seems to only think about himself and what he wants instantly.  When we punish him, he stomps away or throws things on the ground.  He is not violent, and doesn't hurt himself or other people.  But we are truly worried about his behavior and choices.  It seems he doesn't care about doing his best or doing the right thing.  We really need some help / advice.

From your description there are indications that your son is displaying emtional disturbance (vs normal-spectrum childhood behavior problem). This invites evaluation by a pediatric mental health clinician.

Thank you for your time Dr. Kennedy.  I am extremely worried....we were thinking maybe ADD or ADHD, but never an "emotional disturbance".  What does that mean?  Should I just find a child psychologist?
