My Son will not participate in team activities

My 5 1/2 year old son has no problems doing anything in small (2 - 4 children) groups, but when it comes to circle time at school, or team sports he wants to do it, but something stops him.  He tells us that he is "not good" at it and then he shuts down.  How do we help his build his confidence other then keep telling  him as long as he tries his best and has a good time that is all that matters.

It's anxiety - probably social anxiety.  I might suggest you google the phrase "social anxiety and school" or "anxiety and children" or similar words/phrases.  It does appear as if your son's anxiety is not severe; and time, patience and understanding from all involved will help a great deal in helping your son feel more comfortable in preconceived unsafe environments.  Talking about anxiety and confidence often backfires; the child often feels pressured by such efforts (althought well-meaning).  Perhaps individual sporting activities as swimming or gymnastics or similar sports might be more appealing to your son - maybe even music or art lessons.  As for circle time at school, would your son feel more comfortable if he could "listen and watch" but not participate (at least not until he is ready) - this would certainly take the pressure off of him.  Playdates with classmates can also have positive results.  You should be able to find other advice and suggestions from searching the internet.  Just some thoughts .....
