My daughter is horribly scared of needles

My daughter is horribly scared of needles

My daughter is scared of needles, anything close to a needle near her will make her scream out in terror and she will run out of the hospital/school and keep running. If you try to pin her down she will scream her head off. She is 13 years old and has recently had 2 of her three HPV jabs. This was her first proper injection and she jumped out of the chair with the needle still in her skin. She pulled it out and after being sick screamed at the teachers and ran away. We have not tried to help this because we have been told it will go with time, but I'm not so sure. She gets such a terrified look on her face and screams and kicks. I really feel like crying when i see her like this, she looks in horrid pain. as soon as they begin to start talking to her and get the needle ready she really tries to concentrate on something else. I really want this fear to pass in case of emergency and for future injections. Please help me, it is not only hurting her, but her mood at school. I have had cases when her friends torment her by talking about sewing needles, of course it is all fun and games because they don't realise how scared she actually is, but she will run away and has once hit a girl because she wouldn't stop which is very different from her usual behaviour. Please reply, she really needs your help.
Thank you, Dani

The name for this type of specific phobia is trypanophobia, a type of anxiety disorder. Cogniitve behavioral therapy is the recommended type of treatment to address this condition, but the propsects of success are not terribly great - the treatment isn't a quick cure and when treatment addresses a condition that does not occur with great frequency (as it does with diabetics, for example, who face injections on a daily, even multiple times daily, basis) it - i.e., treatment - is more difficult. Often a more useful approach is to employ an anxiolytic or a beta blocker at times when injections are necessary. The child can be sufficiently calmed to allow the procedure to be completed, though the child will still react negatively.
