My douther has a problem with stimulating her self.

My douther has a problem with riding the side of her cheer at school. She is 6 yrs. old and what ever we try to do it don't work. She has been doing this sense she was around 3 yrs. old it started on the arm of the couch and the corner of her bed. I don't know what to do? We have took a cheer to school that has arms on it so she can't ride on the side of the cheer, but she still rides the front of it. I've tryed talking to her, yelling at her, grounding her, and spanking her but nothing works. We even took her to the Docters to see if she had some kind of infection. please help us!Sammy

Dear Sammy,

First, it would make sense to re-visit this matter with your daughter's pediatrician. I she receives a clean bill of health from that consultation, following up with a behavioral health clinician would make sense. It may well be that your daughter has now developed a habit pattern and that a program of systematic behavior modification needs to be undertaken. The clinician can help to pin down the nature of the problem and work with you to develop the intervention plan.
