My son doesn't seem to gain weight for several months

by Avi2006, Feb 23, 2009 01:25PM
Hello,
My son is 2 years and 7 months now. He is still only 24 lb.8 oz.
He doesn't grow in weight for atleast 4 months. THen we see some difference there
Because of his asthma symptims his weight gain is 1 step forward and 2 steps back
I feel bad that I am not able to do anything better than giving him preventive medicines like Pulmicort
And we give him Albuterol/Xofonex when his symptoms worsens like cough+nasal congestion
We were told that these medicines don't impact the growth as much. Maybe 2 - 3 inches shorted than other kids and then that they catch up later in life.
Is that true?
In general, what are other growth aspects we should be concerned about that his weight gain could impact?
And how do I know I am feeding him good?

His typical day is like this:
7.30 - 8 AM -  Wakes up
8.30 - 10 AM Eats breakfast - 1 pancake with butten or toast with butter or cereal or other such
10 AM - Gets dropped at daycare
10 AM eats some snacks like multrain crackers at daycare--sometimes he skips this as his brekpast ends at 10 AM
11.30 AM Eats lunch + 4 oz milk at Preschoo/Daycare
12-2 - Sleep time
3 30 - Snack
4.30 PM - Another 4 oz milk
6 PM - Comes home and eats some snacks/fruits
7.30 PM - Eats dinner like roti/rice with some indian curries/veg. stew etc
9 PM - Drinks another 5 oz milk
Sleeps anytime between 9-10 PM
Around 4 AM - He wakes up and wants more milk - we give 3-4 oz milk

Please reply about this schedule and my other concerns

Thanks

I will defer to our Child Nutrition folks about the specific diet and your son's requirements. Relative to the impact of his medical condition (and treatmenht) on his growth, you have received correct information. And there is ususally not anywhere near a 2 or 3 inch difference when asthmatic kids are compared with their non-asthmatic peers. For a child of 3 years, the median weight is approx. 33 pounds. All you can reasonably do is be sure your son is eating a balanced and healthy diet, avoiding an overconsumption of fatty foods and an overabundance of carbohydrate-rich foods. If a healthy diet is being consumed, supplements (including daily multivitamins) are not necessary.
