My son has Severe sensory integration dysfunction have a question

by vincent, Jul 11, 2000 12:00AM
He has been dx formally with severe sensory integration dysfunction, how does this effect his launguage? He is four and speech delay. My most concern is when he is upset or his "senses" are out of wack his speech makes no sense otherwise he uses appropraite language. Thank you Vincent

Dear Vincent,

It's not unusual, though not necessarily part of the condition, for children with sensory integration disorder to display some problems in the speech/language area (because speech and language are associated with various aspects of sensory experience). Call this to the attention of the therapist who is working with your son, and see if the therapist recommends any specialized intervention around speech/language. It will probably be useful, chiefly because his language is delayed.
