This could be sensory based behaviour.  Sensory Integration Disorder is assessed by an Occupational Therapist who would put together a programme and sensory diet.  With sensory issues any or all of the senses can be under or over sensitive, and it can flutuate throughout the day and day to day.  That may also account for your difficulties getting him to eat.  His smell and taste maybe over sensitive.
Sensory issues are always part of an autistic spectrum disorder, but you can have sensory issues without being on the autistic spectrum.  However he should be assessed to make sure that his speech and social interaction skills are age appropriate.  He is 2, and he should be starting to become more social.  Children on the spectrum tend not to develop as their peers in these areas and from the age of 3+ there tends to be a widening of the gap between them and their peers from a social interaction point of view.
I would go to his paediatrician and ask for a referal to a multi disciplinary team that has experience in diagnosing autistic spectrum disorders and sensory integration disorder.
He may well not be on the spectrum.  But if he is, the sooner he begins therapy the better the prognosis
