My son will not have a BM in the toilet!

by theirmom, Apr 25, 2002 12:00AM
My son will be 4 years old in July and will only do BMs in his pants. He has done it in the toilet about 6 times and otherwise, is completely dry during the day and often at night.

Three weeks ago, we gave him the choice of keeping his underware and doing BMs in the toilet, or keeping his diapers. He chose the underware and did BMs in the toilet for 3 days in a row. Then he held it in for the next 4 days.

After calling his doctor, we gave him a glycerin suppository, but ever since, he is back to soiling his pants. He now holds it in and we have to give him a suppository every 3-4 days. What should we do now?

Essentially, stay focused on your current path. Instead of the suppository, ask your doctor about a regimen (perhaps stool softener and maybe laxative) to prevent constipation as your son gets used to this new process. Do not revert to diapers now that you've moved in this direction. It'll be fine - give it time. Also, establish a simple reward system for each time your son uses the toilet.
