NIGHTMARES

MY 4-YEAR OLD SON HAS HAD NIGHTMARES OFF AND ON SINCE HE WAS TWO, BUT THEY SEEM TO BE GETTING WORSE RECENTLY. LAST NIGHT HE DID NOT RECOGNIZE ME OR HIS OLDER BROTHER, AND WAS ABSOLUTELY WILD AND PANICKED. IT WAS EXTREMELY DISTURBING, AND WENT ON FOR QUITE A WHILE. I CAN'T HELP BUT BE CONCERNED. WOULD YOU PLEASE DISCUSS CHILDHOOD NIGHTMARES AND INFORM ME ON HOW TO HELP MY CHILD? HAS CAFFEINE EVER BEEN RELATED TO NIGHTMARES?

Dear Ms. Taylor,

The episodes your son is experiencing are quite likely not nightmares at all, but rather a phenomenon known as night terrors, a type of sudden partial awakening. This is a topic we note fairly often in this Forum, because it is a normal part of development with many children. Use the SEARCH function in this Forum and you will see other questions and replies about this experience.
