Natural treatments for ADHD

I am trying to find out if anyone knows the effects/side effects of using St Johns wort as a 'treatment' for ADHD. My son is 4 years old, he has not been put on Ritalin as he is too young, and we are just looking into other options.
We have also looked at Nux Vomica, but are a bit unsure of the dangers with this.
I know St Johns wort is more commonly associated with depression, but we have been told it works. I just want some facts, please, to back this up!

I continue to use homeopathy treatments for my 7 y.o. One source of information can be found on the homeopathyhome.com site. There are many inquiries on this forum regarding ADD.

FYI, so far homeopathy has been very successful for my son. He is now in a gifted program and continues to develop into a well rounded child. This is a far cry from previous years when I was told he won't make it in life. Essentially, I was told good luck. Homeopathy definitely worked for us. My suggestion, it's worth the try.

Dear Ms. Kellow,

No, there is no evidence that hypericum (active ingredient in St. John's Wort) is effective in the treatment of ADHD. Hypericum, like some of the prescription antidepressants, acts on serotonin, one of the neurotransmitters. Simply because it is not a prescrition drug, and is manufactured from a natural substance, is not a reason to give it to a child as young as four in any case.

Diagnoses of ADHD in children as young as four have to be suspect - after all, the core symptoms of ADHD (overactivity, inattention, impulsivity) normally occur to some extent in most four year olds. If your child, though, is extremely hyperactive (i.e., at the severe end of the spectrum), Dexedrine might be considered. It is usually best to address ADHD-type symptoms in pre-schoolers with behavior management and environmental measures, not with medication.
