Nighttime Potty Training

by April2, Sep 17, 2008 08:41AM
I have a question about nighttime  potty training. We decided to try to let go of the pull-ups at night and see how our just turned 4 year old would do (especially since we just ran out! :) The first three nights he did great. My husband got him up around 1am or 2am to go potty. (He didn't really set the alarm, just happened to wake up) My son would be half-asleep but my husband would lead him into the bathroom or carry him in to go potty. He stayed dry these first few nights and we were encouraged. The next three nights, we put him to bed and then got him up to go potty an hour or so later before we went to bed and he woke up in the morning completely wet.
Should we still get up half-way through the night to have him go potty or is he just not ready yet to stay dry all night? Should we give this a few more months?
Just wondered what's the best thing to do here. Thanks!

Looks as though you do not ever blame him for lack of bladder control. You are excellent parents. I actually feel ill when I hear that parents scold for potty accidents.

And luckily you realize when someone is asleep they are really not conscious of their actions.

So he goes to bed when? 8pm? That's maybe 6 hours he holds it til 2am? Pretty good I'd say. The only thing that is a bit backward here is that some parents notice it's time to potty train when the child IS waking up with full bladder and not peeing in the diaper. Usually around age 2 right?

May have a tiny bladder. I do.

The interruption of sleep for you all is no fun.
Are you limiting liquids after 5 pm? I know it always seems sort of abusive. I never did it with my kiddos, but you know that's what makes the tinkle.....
I personally would wait 8 more weeks, try again - 8 more weeks etc

Hope you have nice plastic sheets.

Warmest regards

No, we don't scold him. And he's still in a toddler bed with the crib mattress so the wetness doesn't do any damage. :) I don't think I'll move him to a bigger bed until I know he stays completely dry for a long time.
He goes to bed around 9pm. I'd like it to be earlier but my husband doesn't get home until 7pm from work and usually wants to spend some time playing with him before he goes to bed. So, we've been putting him to bed around 9pm lately and getting him up around 10:30pm or 11pm to go potty, but he'll sleep until 8am.
I don't know if he has a small bladder or not. I do know my daughter used to have accidents for awhile when she was little and my husband said he used to pee the bed for a long time when he was a kid. I don't know if it's just sleeping too deeply or what.
He took a long time to potty train during the day. He was 3 before I had him potty trained. We've just now been trying the night thing.
Thanks for writing back. I guess we'll play this by ear and see how things go.
