No concept of time

No concept of time

I have a 12 year old who has no concept of time.  We have tried countless rewards and checklists and races and everything we can think of since she was about 7 years old.  None have been effective.  She has even come up with her own reward a bunch of times.  She also has and still has a terrible time with Math.  (My nine year old girl did well with the reward program.)  I think there is more to this than just getting ready quickly.  She is homeschooled now because the school system was content to fail and humiliate and not help her until she was three years behind. She takes an hour to complete an assignment that should take her 20-30 minutes max. I have tried giving her her own space and a timer.  Nothing is helping. have tried sitting next to her and continually prodding her as well as taking privilages away if I can see she is goofing around in her head. She is also not able to build on other concepts that she has already demonstrated competency with.  If she has learned a new concept one Monday and then practiced it daily through the week, many times she will swear I have never taught her the concept next Monday.  Every summer we review all Math facts and other concepts we have learned thoughout the year and still come September its brand new material in her eyes. Help me please. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you considered ADHD ---- major symptom here, especially in girls is a lack of time management skills. This is probably the most important skill anyone with ADHD can master and although meds may help in short term -- do not forget to teach and re-teach a consistant method for managing timelines.  I am an adult who still stuggles daily with this, and one of the main reasons (I can see now) why my self esteem is so low.  I have even known that my kids needed picking up from school in half an hour, become distracted and received a phone call 45 min AFTER school let out!.  My son also diagnosed ADHD and time is a real stressor.   Although I would recommend pediatrician visit - I can only advise to KEEP CALM, keep reminding,  and be consistant with only one method for about a full school year before you decide to try something else.  I have blown up at my son for running late and seen how it has destoyed his whole day. My son and I both work best to immediate timelines,  try a wind up timmer at the table for math assignments and try only a few lines at first then move on to whole page so as not to overwelm and put her off. You may be surprissed at how efficient she can work in this way. Also if presenting a whole page assignment, cover all but the line she needs to be working on, again a whole page of work can be intimidating. When i was little they didn't think girls had ADD (or hyperactivity at that time) we just show it different, especially if a quiet girl.! good luck
