No longer sleeping

My son has been a fabulous sleeper since he was about a year.  He's now almost 3, and he's a twin, so he shares a room with his brother.  He is now suddenly waking 5 to 8 times a night, fully awake when he does.  He wants us to cover him, kiss him, whatever.  We are not great with letting him cry it out.  In fact, we can't.  He's waking up the whole household over and over, and we're exhausted.  I'm just not sure what to do with him--he has a nightlight, a very regimented bed time routine that we've done for 3 years (bath, books, warm milk, bed), he has music that plays the same song over and over each night.  Please help!

Does he sleep during the day sometimes they do take long naps and especially if they are in day care,so cut back on the hours he naps during the day .The only way really is to let him cry but I realise that is hard .What time does he go to bed?Has there been any new happenings recently any changein routine,  could have upset him
