At age 2, my son only had about 10 words. His pediatrician DID finally refer him for a speech evaluation at that age. I believe some may wait until they're 3, but you may want to ask for a referral. I know it gave me peace of mind. My son may have come around on his own, but I'm sooo happy I took him! The speech therapist told me that many kids spend a year or more in therapy....my son was done in SIX MONTHS! :-D

In the meantime, please try the exercise I've listed below. My son started talking *immediately*!! I was almost angry that it was soooo easy!! Of course, it took some time to fine-tune his speech and increase his vocabulary but I believe he became more motivated when he realized how nice it was to verbally ask or tell something. He did learn some sign-language in therapy (which I wasn't sure about permitting but I did) and the therapist was right...he stopped using the signs when he could talk.

THE EXERCISE:
Take a toy, say a toy cow, and get his attention on the toy. Now, put the toy next to your mouth and say the word ("cow" in this example). THEN, put the toy next to his cheek and tell him it is HIS turn. I swear my son responded immediately and I try to pass this on to as many people as I can.

If you can...let me know if it works for you and best of luck!!!!

That is good to know.  I am glad they were able to get their speech caught up!

Well as long as your dr doesn't seem to be worried then you shouldn't be.  All kids advance at different levels.  He may start talking all of a sudden like he has been talking for a while.  It just all depends.  Good luck and I hope he starts talking soon!

Definately get the hearing checked again to make sure everything is OK. My husbands nephew had Polyps which affected his speech although his brother talked jibberish and then all of a sudden at around 3, he started to talk and it became better rather quickly. Every child is different as well but get his hearing checked and talk to your paediatrician if you have major concerns.

Hi my sister-n-law had triplets and then another set of twins.  All premie's and all with delayed speech.  By age 2 they all had a speech therapist work with them because of weak mouth/tongue.  Within a short period of time they all had advanced in their language skills.  The therapist said with some mouth exercises they have really caught up.  They are now 6 and 3 yrs old.

Hi laic,  thanks for the advice. We saw our pedia dr 3 months ago(I think). He said that my baby is just a little delayed in talking but it seems he wasn't worried. We had his hearing done when he was just born, then before he got discharged from NICU(fever after a day he's born) then 6 months old, then a year old(tech said my son is so alert) and the next hearing will be next month(2nd yr Bday). When you call him his name, he will answer you(ha? That's the way HD answers us instead of saying yes-since he doesn't talk yet lol)

Every child advaces at a different rate.  It has also been said that the earlier they walk, the later they talk and vice versa.  It could just be his rate of speed in his speech.  I was going to mention having his hearing checked until you said that he can understand everything you say and follows instructions well.  You still may want to have his hearing checked just to rule that out completely.  I, however, would check with your dr to see if this is normal and if the dr is not worried then you should not be worried.  Again, he could just be a little bit slower with his speech.  The sitter that I was taking my son to, she had a son that didn't start talking until he was close to 2 then all of a sudden, he just started talking.  His speech was not as clear as other 2 year olds but he was understandable.  Just be patient and check with his dr and if they don't see a problem then you shouldn't worry!  Just be patient!
