What, if anything, is the cause of Oppositional Defiance Disorder?  Is it genetic? Can a sufferer "grow out of it"? Do you recommend Risperdol, my daughter is currently on Ritilin.  I feel as though it is not working for her. She is still very oppositional and very demanding.

I think it is such a shame that there is so much sterotyping going on here.  Not knowing all the facts just assuming.  Glad to see that you have two normal children who arent struggling.  As for those of you who are struggling.  Keep hanging in there.  Keep the consistence and structure going and it slowly gets better.  Just stop breath relax, and keep on keeping on.

There is a behaviour programme called 1-2-3 magic which I have heard is very successful especially with children with ADHD.  There must be someone through your Special Ed Department who would know about this system and who/where you could information from about it.
I think I heard somewhere else that if meds are not working for ADHD then maybe your child does not have that.  But I don't know the truth of this or enough about ADHD.
I do know a boy diagnosed with ODD and he also has a diagnosis of Aspergers.
Does all the behaviour fit the criteria for ODD or are there any social communication problems, lack of imagination, having to stick to the same sequence of events in the same order otherwise they throw a tantrum?

I agree with April2 take a look at Sue Dengates website or her book Fed Up with childrens Behaviour, and you will see that the preservitives and colours in food can affect your childs behaviour. I have followed this diet with my 6 year old son for about 4 months now and he not as angry anymore. Its worth looking at.

My friend's child was diagnosed with ODD at seven years of age.  He was removed from his school and sent to a "special" school for one year and then was returned to his "home" school.  Since there were still issues, my friend took her son to another doctor who diagnosed him with severe social phobia - an anxiety disorder.

I'm wondering - is it possible that the diagnosis of ODD is incorrect?  The fact that the Ritalin is not working is usually a "clue" the ADHD diagnosis is incorrect.  Does he have friends at school or is he shunned by his classmates (usually children with ADHD are "shunned" by classmates).  And yes, children with severe anxiety have tremendous tantrums and frustration levels and many, many meltdowns.  Anxiety, by the way, is an inherited trait - a disorder which one can learn to manage but it will not go away nor will a child "outgrow" it.  Anyway, just another thought ...

I am well aware of childhood behavior.  I have worked in the childcare field for more than 7 years and I have 2 children with me right here at home.  The above situation that april2 describes is not ODD, it's called a TANTRUM and children have them all of the time, especially children that have not been taught self-control.  Luckily, for some children, they do grow up/mature as they get older.  But it will be hell for the ones who dont.  They'll be labeled "sick" and drugged up and used as lab rats probably for the rest of their lives.  Go right ahead and keep feeding into the system designed to make money for all the new drugs and "conditions" they create on a yearly basis

I went to a highschool that was in a less-than-par neighborhood my 8th grade year.  These people were buck wild and very bad.  Their parents did not care.  That's known from police patrolling everyday and the nursery on the highschool campus!  This was the first time I ever heard of Ritalin.  It wasn't working b/c these children had no real physiological conditions keeping them from functioning.  What all of them lacked was discipline and raising.

Like Iv listed before, those are your next chain of disorders.  And since you are into drug intervention, look for the latest drugs on the market for a around-about-the-way cure to all of them

I've heard about this disorder. I'm sorry if the above poster seemed harsh. She probably has never experienced this. My friend's little girl had this. My friend was not a lazy mother either who didn't hold her child accountable. She came from a good, loving family. She did her best to discipline this child but she would go into rages, etc. She would put her in her room and she'd kick the door or make a hole in the wall. This was also a 7 year old! I felt sorry for my friend because she felt so alone and overwhelmed. She was doing the best she could but this child would get out of control.
She tried medications, etc. and finally got her tested for allergies and food sensitivities. I'm not sure what kind of testing they did but they had to do it out of their own pocket because their insurance didn't cover this extensive of testing that they wanted. They even tested her hair strands for dificiancies, I guess? Sorry if I'm not much help here. But anyway, they did find out that she had some sensitivities to certain food dyes and a few other things. They also discovered that when she went without eating for more than 3 hours, her blood sugar would get too low and she'd be really crabby and more likely to lose it. After taking her off certain foods and sending her to school with a protein snack to eat every 3 hours, like a handful of nuts or cheestick, etc., they found that she was acting much better. They did get the school's permission for this.
I'm not sure if any of this would help your daughter or not but maybe it's something you could investigate? It's worth a shot. Sorry I don't know that much about this, just what my friend went through but my heart goes out to you. It's not an easy thing, I know. I hope things get better for you soon.

most of the time ODD is linked to another disorder.  My son has Bipolar, ADHD, and ODD.  They say they are comorbid.    Risperdol I would think would be used for ADHD, not ODD. ODD has no medication treatment that I have found thus far.  ODD requires lots and lots and lots of patience, always having to stay one step ahead, and making sure your NO's are NO, and YES is YES.  It is very hard sometimes.  But it gets easier.

as to the comment from treazzure007
It is really a shame that you stereotype that way. Everyone is always soooo eager to blame the parents.  I feel a lot of these newer conditions that are arising are doing so because of society.  Two parent households are struggling with both parents working, and what do you think it is doing to single parent households?  Parents try to meet basic needs, and other needs take the back burner.  Can't always blame the parents if they are doing all they can do.  Public schools don't need finished off, they don't want to work with children who are anything less than perfect, it is too much of a challenge for them.  At least from my experience that has been the case.
Do you think children with special needs want or need sympathy or attention that makes them seem different, most want to be looked at as normal and treated normal.

oppositional-defiance-disorder???
what will they think of next?  talking-back-disorder?  cant-follow-the-rules disorder?  i-dont-feel-like-listening disorder?  wont-sit-down disorder, wont-shut-up disorder, wont-turn-off-the-television disorder?  im-ignoring-you disorder?

Im sorry I cant answer your question in the light you would have appreciated.  This country is the pits.  Declaring disobedience as an illness will go ahead and finish off the public school system b/c teachers wont be able to do anything with these children due to their chronic "conditions".  Lazy parents never intended to.  They'll never be held accountable for their actions or learn the basics they need in life that good parents begin teaching their children from toddlerhood- obedience, responsibility and self-control.  It also takes away from the sympathy and attention that children who actually suffer with special needs deserve.  It's sad and sickening
