PLEASE HELP I'm still breastfeeding at 2 yrs 11mths

by Vik808, Dec 30, 2008 08:40PM
I am still breastfeeding my child at 2 years and 11 months.  I am a single mum and my daughter is very close to me.  She sleeps half the night in my bed with me.  I've been trying to ween her for a year now and i cannot do it. Its extremely hard for me.  She mainly falls asleep with the breast.  She will NOT go to sleep without it.  She will scream histarically until she gets it.   I just dont know what to do.  Its very hard for me to continue to breastfeed her. Its becoming extremely uncomfortable and my nipples are sagging.  I really dont want to have plastic surgery.  I have tried giving her a bottle with milk and sugar instead of the boob, but she prefers the boob.  I have tried soft music, cradling, stroking, patting, singing, tiring her out, letting her cry it out.  I have tried everything.  The doctor suggested tablets which would stop me  lactating.  However, i think my daughter wouldnt handle that if the milk disappeared.  I just hate it when she cries.  And i am alone, so its very hard for me to take so much pressure.  Sometimes i thought i would go totally insane.   Anyway, i really need help to stop her breastfeeding as i'm really tired of it and i think she's too old for it.  Sometimes she asks for it in a public place like the park or restaurant, thats when i get very embarassed and have to leave.  PLEASE HELP ME WITH ANY SUGGESTIONS. THANK YOU!!

Isnt there a breastfeeding support group?  La Leche group International. They may be so fanatical though that they encourage you to continue- I am so sorry you are alone and going through this. Will pray for you to find wisdom and some answers.

The only other thing some of us mothers use when an answer for a child doesn't seem to get through is that
"It's just a rule" and you are too old. Sometimes our doctors tell us to use this sort of philosophy when our kiddos stop using pacifier etc. Good luck honey

I have no suggestions or experience, but you may want to try posting this question in the breastfeeding forum, as many of the ladies there have gone through weaning at different ages and stages.

the breastfeeding forum is http://www.medhelp.org/forums/show/233?camp=msc

The maternal and child health forum is http://www.medhelp.org/forums/maternal/wwwboard.html
