"Phase" or the start of something more?

My son is 6 and he has always been a tough kid since 3. He throws tantrum, bites, kicks, screams & more. Lately, when you think he should be outgrowing the terrible 3's...he is getting progressively worse. Now he's giving me ultimatums and it telling me unless he gets what he wants he won't (what ever it is I'm asking). If he even things he's not going to get his way he will start doing all of the above and he doesn't hear a thing. Some one said to me that he needs a good spanking (I'm not much into spanking)...and that he'll remember that for next time. Perhaps I'm too soft on him and therefore he knows he can pull the wool over my eyes. I'm afraid if I don't get this under control now...I'm really in for it in a few years when he can really fight back. PLEASE HELP ME....WHAT CAN I DO TO CHANGE HIS BEHAVIOR PERMANENTLY?

I have started taken him to counselling and also had a behavioral assessment. It turned out he didn't understand what he was being told - got frustrated and lashed out in many different ways. It was good to know - we can now approach him differently. Maybe that would help
