Question on Anethesia

My 8 year old sister went to get three teeth pulled the other day, and when they gave her the medication she went into like a seizure mode and her back arched and eyes rolled back.  We were told that this is normal for kids and also when they wake up from this.  I was just wondering why this is?

Such an episode apparently is quite unusual, though in at least one clinical study of the use of anesthesia in dental procedures approximayely one in every two hundred patients experienced some seizure activity when nitrous oxide was employed.  One thought about this is that a person who might have an underlying predispoaition to seizure activity would be vulnerable to this side effect. Now, this is not my area of expertise, and you might want to post your question to either the Neurology Forum or the Dental Health Forum of MedHelp for more expert guidance than I can offer.
