Hello, Thank you for creating this forum.  My daughter just turned
3 in Dec and though she verbalizes one can't make out what she is
saying.  She has made strides, but still seems behind other 3
year olds.  She can, when she feels like, follow directions and
she can ask for milk which sounds like duck.  She speaks but it is
in her language.  We finally told her doctor about this and he
explain percentiles and some kids fall below or above and that by
5 they catch up.
He tested her in the office with the Denver 1 1.  She didn't do
very well and since she wouldn'd follow directions the hand held
ear test didn't far well.  So we are going to get her hearing
checked in 2 weeks time.
It doesn't seem to me that it is a problem with her hearing.
Unless she can't understand certain sounds.  If you could offer
any ideas thoughts or anything. I read to her, we talk to her con-
stantly the only thing we can think of is that she has had limited
social contact with children her age. Which is somehting we have
been working on. Anything would be welcomed. Thank you.  Jamie

Dear Jamie,
You are doing the sensible thing by being concerned. While children to develop at different rates, and while different aspects (e.g., cognitive, social, emotional) of any one child's development needn't proceed at the same rate, your daughter's delay in acquiring speech is a problem. The audiological examination is a good idea. You would be perfectly reasonable to seek, in addition, a Speech/Language Evaluation.
Results will indicate in precise terms (a) the ways in which your daughter is mastering or not mastering sppech and language, (b) causes for her difficulties and (c) remedial measures to undertake.
