Re: Normal development

Re: Normal development

When I started puberty at the age of 13, I developed swollen nipples which began to increase and are now quite large.  Now at the age of twenty they are still enlarged and are showing no sign of reducing.

It has got to the point now where I am embarrased to take my shirt off in front of my girlfriend and am constantly aware of people being able ot see them through my clothes.

This problem is affecting our sex life and also starting to depress me because I am unable to be undressed without feeling self-conscious.

I live in a shared house at university and have to wear a top all the time.  I am conscious of the clothes I buy in case my nipples are obvious and when I go on holiday I have to keep my top on which is both uncomfortable and annoying.

Any advice you could give would be appreciated as this problem is effecting my confidence and straining my relationship.

Yours sincerley

Steve!

Dear Steve,

During puberty, many boys experience a condition called gynecomastia, which refers to enlargement of the breasts/nipples. Generally this is a temporary phenomenon, strictly a response to pubescent development, and does not endure. It resolves itself without any specialized treatment. This does not seem to be the case with you, based on your description. Have you discussed your situation with your doctor? If not, please do so, for two reasons. First, it's important to assess the situation and determine if there is any underlying problem (e.g., hormonal) that might be contributing to it and could be treated. Second, it might be possible, if all else is normal, to have some surgical correction if you want to go in that direction.
