Repetitive speech in 9-year-old?

by MTmom720, Oct 24, 2007 10:06PM
My son often will repeat himself after asking a question, in a whispering voice, like "Did you see what I did? (quietly: did you see what I did.)  It's like he is trying to see what it sounds like or something.  Any ideas?

Does he do this when it's something good that he's done?

Like,  if what he's said would be appreciated by people who hear him?  So he's trying to relive saying something kind of heroic?

I think that's completely normal.  I think that's endearing,  and very normal.  You might want to say honey, I just heard  your repeat that,  good job for _________.    I'm so proud of you.

If he keeps repeating EVERYTHING,  negative and positive,  that's a different story.

Yes, it can be when it's something good, and maybe he just wants to hear it again.  It could also be when he's asking a question.  I have to tell you, he's sitting on the rug a little ways away from me, and I just asked him to tell me about his project.  He went about explaining to me what it did and how it's used (a little amplifier he made) and didn't repeat himself once.  I suspect that it may be when he's asking a question that he's not sure about...Just now, I simply took a chance and asked him about it, in a very kind way.  I said, could it be when you are asking maybe a scary question that you're not sure about?  Is it when you're nervous? and he said "maybe" and went back to the electronics. It's just kind of strange, although it is rather sweet.  One of his teachers asked me about it, and mentioned echolalia, but I looked that up, and I don't think that's what it is.
Thanks for listening tonight....

MT,  I don't think it's echolalia either.

I think he wants to kind of hear his triumphs again,  or something he thought he worded very well;.

Best wishes.  He sounds like a really dear boy.

I just wanted to let you know an interesting piece of info - last night, my husband and I were talking about the repeating, and he asked Josh if maybe someone told him to do that.  He told us (after all this time) that his speech therapist at school gave him the idea - he goes to speech therapy for saying Ls like Ys.  She had said at one point to repeat what he says to himself to check on his pronounciation.  Well, I don't know why he didn't tell us that in the first place!  I'm going to ask her about it later today.  Interesting, huh?  I do understand why she would, I think--maybe to have him listen carefully to how he is saying his Ls.
Thanks so much for your input - have a great day.
