Restaurant Behavior

My husband has growing concern that our 9 year old (almost 10) is not acting appropriately at restaurants. He tries to make others at the table laugh by putting salt and pepper in his drink. Last night while out to dinner, he poured cheese on his mussels. He made an inappropriate joke about smelly people and removed himself several times from the table to go look at a poker machine that the restaurant had. I guess my question is that at the almost age of 10, should he be more polished, more gentleman-like at a restaurant? By this age, should his maturity level be higher than where it is? Or, are we we expecting too much?
My husband and I differ in our view on this subject and I wanted to get a professional prospective as to what is appropriate for his age.

Ya, I agree - he sounds pretty normal for a 9 year old boy.  Having said that, I think his behavior in the resturant could improve a bit.
I do think you might be confusing maturity with behavior.  Behavior can be trained and you might want to gently let him know what is unacceptable at the resturant.  Make sure you and your husband agree on this before hand, and don't try to change to many things at once.

I am not a professional, but

Just correct his behavior if you deem it inaproppriate. The only one really "inappropriate" here would be a smelly people joke. Which is still pretty normal for a 9 year old (my husband is full of inappropriate jokes at all times).

And maybe he wanted cheese with his mussels:)

Seems like you really never had any real behavioral problems with him:)

Good luck
