Scared child

by 144lucy, Aug 29, 2009 07:40PM
I have a 5 year old and recently she has been upset and asking questions for example:

Is she going to die are her parents going to die.
She doesn't want to grow up.
She doesn't want to have kids or be a mother.
She seems fearful of everything taking the bus, starting school.

Is this normal for a 5 year old to ask questions about death and becoming older?  Is it normal for her to be scared of these things?

Children who are starting school often do begin to display fears such as the ones you are describing. After she settles into school she will likely revert to her baseline level of functioning. Basically all these fears are versions of separation anxiety, a very frequent response to starting this new phase of their development.
