'Self injury'

My son, age 5, hits and scratches himself when he doesn't get his way. I am seeking advice on how to approach this matter so that this behavior will stop. I would appreciate information related to children and self injury or a list of art therapists, play therapists who might aid in helping my son.

This version of five-year-old tantrum is not that unusual. He's at a stage when he's learning to manage his impulses and to manage the anger that comes when his wishes are frustrated. He may not require any specialized treatment at all.

If you want to follow up with a mental health professional for some assessment, check with your pediatrician for a referral, or with a local child guidance clinic or family service agency.
