Sensory integration disorder

My 6 1/2 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with SI by a very fine developmental child psychologist.  This was confirmed by an SI occupational therapist evaluation.  Her first grade teacher is seeing many behavioral issues in school that are disruptive to the whole classroom.  We are hoping to start occupational therapy next week.  How long will it take before we will be able to see some improvement in the classroom?  At home and in social situations, it doesn't seem to be as bad.  It seems she has good days and bad days, and it's hard to predict what tomorrow will be like.  Many times she has said she would like to go back to kindergarten.  Is first grade learning just too overwelming for her?

Dear Carrie,

There's no way to tell how long it will take to see progress. Sensory integration problems take on many and varied dimensions with ranges of severity.

Disruptive behavior is often associated with sensory integration problems, but isn't diagnostic of such problems. In other words, it may be useful to consider additional evaluation/intervention re: the disruptive behavior (depending on the nature of the disruption).

Surely talk with your daughter's teachers about the matter of her readiness for first grade. You already know that she requires some specialized intervention. Will this be sufficient to allow her to proceed in the regular first grade classroom? Time will tell, but see what the teachers and specialists think.
