Separation Anxiety Issues / Attention

My fiance has a 3 yr old son.  He comes from a split family and both mom and dad have 50/50 custody.  Up until about a month ago, the source of daily daycare shifted between my fiance's mother and his grandparents.  He is the only young child in his family, and therefore has little social skills with children.  During daycare hours and at home in the evenings, he has had only 1 on 1 attention between adult and child.  I have noticed in the last few months that his behavior has changed drastically.  He will scream and cry when leaving the grandparents/great-grandparents' house and has to have constant attention from whatever adult he is with.  It has gotten to the point at times that my fiance and I cannot step out of the room for 5 minutes without him coming to find us.  He has also starting acting out physically by hitting, kicking, and verbally by saying very disturbing things about hurting us or liking the idea of hurting us.

I have been around enough toddlers to know that some of this behavior is normal...to an extent.  Now that I have come into the picture, he seems to act out worse around his father and I.  I'm sure this has to do with resentment towards me because I am taking some of "daddy's time," but how can we work on this constant need for attention and separation anxiety between adult and child?

I belong to a support group for parents and teachers of children suffering from anxiety.  This does not sound like any of the "stories" from any of the parents/teachers in the group.  I don't think anxiety is the issue here.
