Strange blinking

Strange blinking

Hi ,
My son is 6 years old and has just started blinking alot and rolling his eyes , pulling the top lid over the bottom etc and very strange eye movements since we went on holiday a few weeks ago . It seemd to start after he had groomed some horses . It was also very dusty ......I gave him some Piriton ( anti-histamine) , but he is still doing it one week on .I am very worried now and wonder whether to take him to the doctor/optician ? I hope it is not an eye tic developing , as he used to have a " cough" like tic before.......
Can anyone advise?

My son was a little younger than this and he went through a period of eye blinking that concerned me.  He has some other issues in which tourettes would not be uncommon and I didn't know if that was what we were dealing with.  At first, I would talk to him about it and make comments when he did it.  He'd say he just couldn't help it.  Then I just ignored it completely.  The lack of attention caused it to disappear (thankfully) completely.  My son has some motor issues and had just realized he had control over blinking and started this action----  I suspect.  And then I gave him attention for it.

So, I'd watch and see if it goes away.  Don't make comments about it.  If it persists, time to go to the doctor.  I don't know about the piriton aspect and that might be worth a call to the doc too.  good luck

My 7 year old just started the same thing. First it was the blinking and now it is the eye rolling.  Did you ever figure out what was going on with your son? I am very anxious about this.

One consideration.  I am not a doctor, but I would video tape him while doing this and have the doctor look at it.

absence seizures (also called petit mal seizures)
These seizures are characterized by a brief altered state of consciousness and staring episodes. Typically the child's posture is maintained during the seizure. The mouth or face may move or the eyes may blink. The seizure usually lasts no longer than 30 seconds. When the seizure is over, the child may not recall what just occurred and may go on with his/her activities, acting as though nothing happened. These seizures may occur several times a day. This type of seizure is sometimes mistaken for a learning problem or behavioral problem. Absence seizures almost always start between ages 4 to 12 years.
