The use of tegratol for hyperactivity

by shelly, Mar 01, 2000 12:00AM
My son was diagnosed with ADHD at about the age of 5.  Now he is almost 10 and still on ritalin.  He does not like the ritalin and says it makes him "shy".   Over the past month, as an experiment, we have taken him off the ritalin.  His attention and focus on his own have improved dramatically and he is doing fine academically in school.  However, there is still the issue of the hyperactivity.  His doctor suggests we try tegratol to address this issue.  Any comments?  Also, I believe the ritalin has impaired his  peer relations at school.  While on it, he is withdrawn.  Any comments?

Dear Shelly,

The key issue to consider is the degree to which your son's hyperactivity impairs his functioning. If he is hyperactive, but his functioning is not really impaired in any significant way because of the hyperactivity, I wouldn't recommend use of any medication. You need consider medication only if the hyperactivity presents some interference of at least a moderate degree.
