Thinking, speech, problems

by SGN78, Jun 11, 2008 03:04AM
my 6 year old son has very Ltd Social Skills, he has had a great start to school this year but he still lacks social skilss his speech is of concern and we do have help in this area but when we try to do certain games to encourage his thinking and to broaden his brain to click as to think of many different ways he could answer these questions he always looks at me with a blank look or hes waiting for me to say the answer, where as when i ask my 3 year old the same question he rambles on about 3 different possible answers for example  he has difficulty wih He, she, his, her etc. We look at a picture of a boy on the ground crying with a grazed knee. I will ask can you look at the picture and tell me what you see? he will reply uummm crying, I will say Yes he is crying, What do you think happened to him why he is crying and he will reply uummm crying. and my 3 year old will straight away give an answer, The boy is crying because he hurt his knee on concrete, and when I ask I wonder how he hurt himself and he would reply maybe he fell off his bike, skateboard etc. Is this a developmental thing or have I done something wrong.

This definitely sounds like a developmental thing. Its hard to tell whether he just has trouble expressing his thoughts in speech or whether he is really having trouble picking up on the verbal clues. Languaage learning can be very challenging for some children.

I think you should have him evaluated by a developmental specialist, to determine what types of assistance he might need to develop his skills in this area. Perhaps you have already done so, and this is how you received some help for him in speech. Perhaps the help needs more time to take effect, not sure. What was the diagnosis for his speech?
