Three year old that smears poop

Since my son was about 18 months old he has been taking off his diapers when he poops at nap time and smears it on whateve is around, his bed, toys, carpet, walls,etc. He goes threw periods of this, before we would just put him in a onsie but now that he is three they don't make them in his size. We have been potty training for about a month and a half and like most thing with toddlers we have our good days and our bad days. The past week though he has been pooping at what we call "quiet time" (used to be nap time), he will poop take his pull ups off and smear it on the carpet and even on some of his toys. I am almost at the end of my rope and would like to know if this is a problem that requires professional help or can I do something to stop it?

Sounds like he is bored and has found what he feels is a creative way to entertain himself.  Does he have playdoh?  It may be the texture he enjoys, and has no idea of exactly what he's using for his art work. Three year olds normally enjoy playdoh, and will spend a lot of time playing with it.  Quiet time may be a time to put him on the potty as it's obviously when he is going every day.  Sit with him and read to him, this will relax him for the BM and quiet time.  If he gets in the routine of going prior to quiet time, he won't be able to go during quiet time.  Timing is everything.  Good luck and take care.

Smearing feces can be a sign of a more serious issue. Please talk to your son's pediatrician and school.
